InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA –In Indonesia, plantation company is obliged to develop 20% palm oil plantation for the plasma smallholders of the company. The their presence is one unity with the company to cultivate palm oil areas in one region.
Besides the plasma smallholders, the independent ones are too. The independent smallholders are usually around the areas that the company and the plasma cultivate.
Selain petani plasma, ada juga namanya petani swadaya. Keberadaan petani swadaya ini, biasanya tersebar di sekitar perkebunan kelapa sawit yang dikelola perusahaan dan petani plasma.
The palm oil areas belonging to the independent smallholders usually develop because of the palm oil factory that needs fresh fruit bunch (FFB) supply from out of the plantation that the company cultivates.
For the expensive FFB price, many plantations around turn to be palm oil and the people become independent smallholders. The increasing economy from palm oil plantation becomes something interesting for the smallholders to develop it voluntarily. Though they have limited knowledge about planting palm oil, but they keep planting it in their areas.
RSPO Country Director Indonesia Operation, Tiur Rumondang, said, there are many independent smallholders in Indonesia. They are parts of the wider area expansion nationally.
So she thought, it needs good cooperation among the plantation companies and the independent smallholders around their plantation. “The independent smallholders could cooperate with the plantation company to implement the best and sustainable principles and criteria,” she said.
In the late days, many independent smallholders are asked to collaborate by the palm oil plantation company within non government as the faciliator to develop palm oil plantation of theirs. But the cooperation should base on their legal areas.
Just like the plantation of independent smallholders joining Asosiasi Petani Sawit Swadaya AMANAH in Riau Province. They could certify their 1.048 hectare areas belonging to 501 smallholders.
