On the global front, Reuters reported that palm oil futures on the Malaysian Derivatives Exchange lost ground on Thursday (May 15) after four straight sessions of gains. The downturn was driven by a decline in global vegetable oil prices and a stronger Malaysian ringgit, which makes exports less competitive.

The benchmark July 2025 contract fell by RM48 per metric ton, or approximately 1.22%, to RM3,875/ton (around US$904.74) during midday trading—its first decline since the recent rebound began.

A Kuala Lumpur-based trader noted that falling soybean oil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and weakening vegetable oil futures on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange also weighed on market sentiment. The appreciation of the ringgit further dampened demand from international buyers.

Soybean oil prices on CBOT dropped sharply by 4.56%, while the most active soybean oil contract in Dalian slipped 0.63%. Palm oil futures for June delivery in Dalian also edged down 0.67%.
