PALMOILMAGAZINE, KUALA LUMPUR – In an era marked by rapid digital development, the proliferation of hoaxes poses a significant threat, capable of wreaking havoc on individuals, institutions, and entire industries. One of the primary casualties of the hoax epidemic is brand integrity, as brands often find themselves ensnared in false information (hoaxes) that tarnish their reputation and erode consumer trust.
Hoaxes operate surreptitiously, leveraging social media platforms with enticing clickbait titles to rapidly disseminate fake information, exploiting the vulnerabilities of online platforms. Sensationalism often trumps accuracy, leading to the swift propagation of misinformation.
A notable example of fake news occurred when a multinational company in Hong Kong fell victim to a $25.6 million fraud scheme employing deepfake technology. Employees were manipulated via video conferences, showcasing the sophistication of modern fraud techniques.
