PALMOILMAGAZINE, SINTANG — The Sintang Regency Government has officially launched a social protection program for 4,500 workers in the palm oil plantation sector, covering 12 months of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (National Employment Insurance) contributions. The initiative, symbolically launched at the Sintang Regent’s Hall on Tuesday, is funded through Palm Oil Revenue Sharing Funds (DBH Sawit) totaling Rp907 million.
Sintang Regent Gregorius Herkulanus Bala emphasized that the program reflects the local government’s commitment to providing broader social protection for workers in the palm oil ecosystem—many of whom have long been overlooked.
“Palm oil plantations are a strategic sector supporting our regional economy. But behind its contribution are vulnerable workers facing risks of accidents and welfare issues. That’s why we’re stepping in to offer employment insurance as protection,” said Regent Bala, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com from Kumparan (Sunday, May 11, 2025).

He clarified that the program serves as a stimulus, not a permanent subsidy. Going forward, he hopes the protection can be sustained independently through cooperatives, farmer groups, or corporate CSR support.
“This assistance should spark a collective awareness that social protection is a basic right for all workers. We urge all stakeholders to continue expanding coverage,” he added.
Hermanus Hadi Purwanto, Acting Head of the Sintang Manpower and Transmigration Office, explained that the program targets informal workers, especially independent farmers and plasma workers within the palm oil industry.
“The goal is to ensure these workers can meet their basic living needs and create a social safety net within the informal sector,” Hermanus said.
He noted that employment insurance provides not only financial security but also peace of mind. “Protected workers can focus better on their jobs without worrying about occupational risks,” he added.
The program is expected to become a model for effective and people-centered use of DBH Sawit, contributing meaningfully to improving community welfare, particularly in strategic sectors like palm oil plantations. (P2)
