PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Government has initiated a plan to enact substantial reforms aimed at bolstering the sustainability of the palm oil industry.
This initiative involves the enhancement of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) scheme’s regulations, with the goal of ensuring that every facet of the palm oil supply chain in Indonesia adheres closely to sustainability standards.
This endeavor involves revisions to President’s Regulation (PR) Number 44/2020, which pertains to the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Plantation Certification Scheme.
These revisions extend to various sectors, including downstream operations, plantations, and bioenergy. The formulation of these regulatory changes is currently undergoing a public consultation process to gather input and feedback from the public.

Assistant Team of Deputy in Food and Agribusiness Coordination Coordinator Ministry in Economy, Ermanto Fahamsyah said that the new ISPO would regulate three main sectors in palm oil industries, they are, the first, about certification regulation in upstream (plantation); the second, about downstream (derivative industries); and the third, about bio energy.
Ermanto continued, there is no explicitly written regulation in detail in the PR. He also mentioned, the detail of the policy would have implementation regulation according to the ministry in charge, for instance, in upstream or plantation sector, there would be regulation of minister of agriculture; in downstream sectors, there would be regulation of minister of industry. In bio energy, there would be regulation of minister of energy and mineral resource.
It needs to notice that new ISPO would be a mandatory for every planter in palm oil sector.
There is no certain period to implement the new ISPO but it is hoped. The decision to publish it would see the condition and preparedness of the regulation itself.
“It is hoped it would be published on 10 November 2023, as same as the commemoration of Hero’s Day but the decision to publish it would see the condition and preparedness of the regulation itself,” he said to Palmoilmagazine.com, Monday (25/9).
Besides the new ISPO would also reinforces the roles of ISPO committee to accelerate ISPO process. The smallholders would get 4 (four) years to implement ISPO scheme after ISPO has been published. This is the obligation
By the improvement, the Government of Indonesia commits to escalate sustainability in palm oil industries to deliver positive impacts for the environment and the industries themselves. Every stakeholder, planter, and smallholder, including the producer, mill, smallholder should be ready to face the future changes while doing their best to maintain palm oil industries in Indonesia remain sustainable and competitive in the markets globally.
