IPOA: Palm oil Does not Force the Children to work

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA–Chairman of Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA), Joko Supriyono emphasized, both in the plantation areas, and industries, the children are never hired to work. It is against the law and it could not happen.

“Palm oil plantation companies never hire the children,” he said when attending a national dialog “Palm Oil Multi-Stakeholder National Diaologue: Towards decent work for all in Indonesia’s Palm Oil Sector" in Pullman Hotel, recently

He also mentioned, the job description in palm oil areas is beyond the capability and ability of the children. To harvest fresh fruit bunch (FFB), for instance, besides having special skill, and to lift a 10 to 15 kg FFB, the children could not do that. So, the children could not do that.

“Besides the management of a company would not hire the children for the two conditions to work in a company are adult and have ID,” he told.

He did not deny if the children were sometimes found in the palm oil areas. He ensured, they worked there because their parents had given permit. “Their own parents asked them to help them. It is about the minor job” he said, as quoted from Wartaekonomi. (T3)
