Info SAWIT, JAKARTA –As one provincewhere the equator passes by, Central Kalimantan is very potential to develop kinds of agribusiness sector. One of them is by developing palm oil.
The good climate and nature make palm oil develop fast in the province. If in 2014, there had been 1,115 million hectares, in 2016, it was predicted, palm oil areas were about 1,2 million hectares. The province is crowned as the biggest third palm oil producer nationally, reaching 3,7 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO).
Based on what InfoSAWIT recently got, of 1,2 million hectares, palm oil trees planted there reach about 915 thousand hectares within the avarage productivity reaching 4 tonsof CPO/hectare/year.
Though agribusiness industrial development in natural resource (area) – base faces many issues in the province, but it positively develops. The green development starts to emerge.
For example, based on Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the areas certified by RSPO in Central Kalimantan have reached 415,8 thousand hectares within the fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production reaching 6,8 million tons and the certified crude palm oil (CSPO) production reaching 1,6 million tons.
Not only the palm oil companies got the RSPO certificates, the smallholders got the same. Still based on RSPO, the smallholders’ areas having RSPO certificates have reached 1.073 hectares within FFB production certified by RSPO reaching 6.407 tons and involving 941 families of the smallholders.
The sustainable practices are done because in the midst of 2015, there was a forum, called, Governors Forest Climate Task Force (GCF), where 16 Governors and Presidents of the States in Asia, Latin America, and Africa attended. The Provincial Government of Central Kalimantan is committed to realize green development through the jurisdiction certification scheme to have sustainable palm oil production.
The scheme is believed to make positive implication to increase the regional economy and in the same time, it protects the environment from the damage. (Please read InfoSAWIT July 2015, Jurisdiction Certification in Central Kalimantan, To Make Non Overflowing Carbon)
But, Central Kalimantan did not do it in a sudden. The fact showed, it was started in the midst of 2013 by publishing the Roadmap of Village Development in Low Carbon of Green House Gas Emission and Low Deforestation. The goal is to increase the productivity and reduce poverty.
The Roadmap is to accelerate the implementation of Regional Regulation No. 5 / 2011 about the Sustainable Plantation Cultivation. It has targets, such as, to decrease deforestation up to 20% from the deforestation in 2006 – 2009 in the province.
The jurisdiction certification was followed up by the cooperation between the Central, Regional Governments and Yayasan Inovasi Bumi (INOBU), to make database of the land of the commodity in Central Kalimantan Province. (T2)
