InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA, -Pindo Deli Pulp and Paper Mills - Karawang, one subsidiary of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas, has significantly saved the energy after one year implementing Clean Manufacturing Program (CMP) when producingpulpandpaper. Pindo Deli decreased the energy usage up to 10% in the first year implementing CMP, twice bigger from the first target. The project is the collaboration between APP Sinar Mas and IDH the Sustainable Trade Initiative. The decreasing energy usage in Pindo Deli contributed 5% to decrease green-house gas emission.
After one year implementing the program, Pindo Deli Karawang recently shared the knowledge to other factories. It was made in the workshop that Association of Pulp and Paper Indonesia facilitated. The workshop was to share knowledge and method of best practice as part of APP Sinar Mas to support the initiative implementation of energy conservation in their chain of business.
The CMP program emphasized the goal of APP Sinar Mas to energy efficiency and decrease green-house gas emission, as it is written in the Roadmap Vision 2020. The program also completes the goal of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) from the Government of Indonesia, within the target, 29% to reduce green-house gas emission without condition in 2030. APP Sinar Mas started implementing CMP in the fourth quarter of 2016 to identify the chances to increase the energy efficiency and implement the benchmark to get the maximal energy safe and carbon emission both in the middle and long term.
Director Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, APP Sinar Mas, Elim Sritaba said, to realize the ambition as it is in Paris Agreement, every actor involved should contribute to mitigate the climate change. APP Sinar Mas is ready to complete the government’s effort to realize it. The focus of efficient energy could make the significant difference. Not only to reduce green-house gas emission, but also helped APP Sinar Mas to be efficient in their business. The prestige that Pindo Deli got could become the real sample and helped APP Sinar Mas to get Sustainable Business Awards in the category Best Energy Management. “We are excited to share our knowledge and experience and would do more to support the production process to be more efficient in energy. This is one effort to be more responsible and sustainable stakeholder and could give the positive to the environment,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Friday (22/12/2017) di Jakarta.
Meanwhile, IDH Indonesia Country Director, Fitrian Ardiansyah, said, the sustainable chain of stock could only exist if the sustainable practice is really implemented to minimize the material and energy in the chain of business and the other sector. The innovation that Pindo Deli has run showed that the energy safe and material usages are really implemented. “We do hope that this is a good start to contribute to the national target in the NDC and the other companies or other stakeholders could implement the same in pulp and paper industries both in Indonesia and other countries. The sustainability should be a norm so the industries could operate more productive, efficient, and responsible,” he said. (T2)
