InfoSAWIT, YOGYAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) was so serious talking about forest in Indonesia in his former campus, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta last week. Though the event was likesilaturahmi among the alumni when making the 68thDies Natalis UGM, the President also mentioned about the forest case in this country for there are minimal advantages that the people could get.
He even felt sorry that the forests in Indonesia are abandoned thought they are really fertile. It does not take some time to improve the wet or dry land. “Why don’t we have our forests, such as, mahogany – for about a million or two million hectares?” he said in front of the students and lecturers of Faculty of Forestry, UGM, as quoted fromTempo.co.
The President thought, the forest actually could be useful for the people and it is easy to do. Having forest laying about 12,7 million hectares, the people should be fully involved to cultivate. He emphasized, the people should have it.
“The people plant, and should be in corporate. The people could be a group or big groups to have thousands of hectares. From this perspective, they could sell the downstream products, that is, factory,” he said.
He also mentioned, the government could divide the forest so that the people could cultivate. Jokowi even promised, if it is necessary, the government should prepare the downstream sector, or factory to buy the forest results.
The President even gave example, the good and useful forest management for the people and the private has been implemented in the wealthy countries from the forest only, such as, Norway. “The forest should be cultivated, managed from the upstream to downstream sectors, should be solved. Plant here, the factory is there, in a region. But the people or the country has (have) it,” the President said.(T2)
