Indonesia Supports the Palm oil Fair Trade with EU

InfoSAWIT, SINGAPURA – According to Ministry of Trade, the cooperation between ASEAN and European Union (EU) gets better. It is known from the consistent trade value and investment in the two regions. Based on the statistic from EU, the trade between ASEAN and EU reached € 226,6 billionsin 2017, increased 9,1% from the previous year. EU was also the biggest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of ASEAN in 2016 reaching €26,3 billions. It showed that it is important to cooperate in both regions.

Billateral Meeting

Before making Consultation Meeting inASEAN and EU, Minister of Trade, Indonesian Republic, Enggartiarto Lukita, did billateral meeting with EU Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström. Both Enggartiarto and Cecilia appreciated the progress that was agreed in the fourth meeting between Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA) on 19-23 February 2018 in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia and EU specifically promised to watch palm oil issue in Indonesia.

Indonesia also emphasized, it needs to have the same perspective between both sides for the new issue, such as, Trade and Sustainable Development. Besides Enggartiarto emphasized the fair and equal trade. Both sides agreed to support the plans inASEAN-EU FTA, and every side could be flexible to minimize the gap.

In the official statement toInfoSAWIT, Friday (2/3), after making billateral meeting with EU Trade Commissioner in the morning, Enggartiarto became a speaker in the 6th Ministerial Panel ASEAN-EU Business Summit (AEBS).

The main topics were the progress of economic integration in ASEAN heading to ASEAN Economic Society or ‘Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN (MEA)’ 2025, the trend of trade in EU and ASEAN, the individuals of ASEAN countries, and the trend in global trade.

In his description, Minister of Trade told the economic reformation and the connectivity development that Indonesia has done, including the facility programs in ASEAN. Minister of Trade also invited every businessman to invest in Indonesia. (T2)
