InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Four Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD) that independently cultivate palm oil plantations multiply the lists of sustainable cultivation for the independent smallholders in Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) version.
The four KUD consist of the smallholders as the partners of PT PP London Sumatra (Lonsum) Tbk., which is also the subsidiary of IndoAgri Resources Ltd., in Singapura.
In April 2017 KUD Teratai Biru in Sub district of Tungkal Jaya, District of Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatera was the first union getting RSPO certificate. According to RSPO, the union cultivates a 318 hectare area and it involves 183 families.
The other three getting RSPO certificates were in November 2017. The first one is KUD Marga Makmur in Sub district of Muara Lakiatan, District of Musi Rawas, South Sumatera. The union cultivates 451 hectares and involves 99 families.
The second is KUD Tuhu Asih in Sub district of Karang Dapok, District of Musi Rawas Utara, South Sumatera within about 793 hectares of palm oil plantation and involving 233 independent smalllholders.
The third was KUD Karya Mulya in Sub district of Nibung, District of Musi Rawas Utara, South Sumatera. There were 106 independent smallholders within 382 hectare areas.
One smallholders of KUD Teratai Biru, Pairan said, his will to be involved and to get RSPO certificate for the smallholders and other members of KUD is believed that RSPO certificate would be good for them with all regulations. It is reflected by the sustainable principles and criteria in RSPO. “RSPO has good social and environmental cultivation sustainably,” he recently said through WhatsApp.
Joining the scheme of RSPO, he continued, there are some things to get, such as, to increase their welfare, to have source of income from sustainable palm oil plantation. “We want to cultivate and do sustainable practice and the world would admit it,” he said. (T2)
