InfoSAWIT, NUSA DUA - International Conference on Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE) 2018 emphasized that it is important to empower the smallholders to support the sustainability in the future. In the discussion panel “Smallholder: Reaching Sustainability” – many speakers from United Nation Development Program(UNDP) Indonesia, Universitas Jambi, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food shared some programs that the stakeholders have done in palm oil sector, such as, the arrangement of national action plan, smallholders’ empowerment to prevent the fire in the forests, and the replanting program.
National Platform Manager UNDP Indonesia, Rini Indrayanti explained that the development of smallholders’ capacity is needed to support the sustainability of the industry in the future. UNDP and Ministry of Agriculture have made Forum Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan Indonesia (FoKSBI) to make sure the sustainability in palm oil sector.
“FoKSBI has formulated the national action plan or rencana aksi nasional (RAN) which covers the smallholders’ capacity development. RAN which is arranged by the multi-sector stakeholders is now waiting for the agreement from steering committee to be adopted in the legal,” she said to some journalists, Thursday (26/4/2018).
She also mentioned,“The arrangement of RAN could be the reference and could be adjusted to some references in sustainable development goals (SDGs). RAN is also to support the government to fulfill 70% of palm oil certification in 2020.”
The main actions in RAN are to make database of the smallholders in Indonesia, to increase the consciousness of the smallholders to obey the regulations, and to increase the coordination among the institutions to support sustainable palm oil industries in the future. (T2)
