Calculate the Carbon Track in Palm Oil Production

InfoSAWIT, NUSA DUA – The search of solution from palm oil production is the same responsibility for every side. It is important to get the carbon track to know how much influence from palm oil production.

“We realize that palm oil has something to do with emission,” Director Global Environment Centre, Faizal Parish said in International Conference Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE) 2018 in Bali where InfoSAWIT also attended recently.

Emission derives from the area and its operational. In 2017 Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Principles and Criteria (RSPO P&C) once discussed, revised, and made new criteria to press green-house gas (GHG) emission from plantation areas when being enlarged. From the two conditions made, there should be trial test system to get the feedback.

“Now it is in the public report from the members of RSPO to get the emission. The calculation of GHG uses emission monitor tool, PlamGHG Calculatorwhich RSPO P&C has developed,” Faizal explained.

From the calculation result, there were some criteria. One of them, Criteria 7.8 that suggests, new planting should follow the procedures in planting. The most effective ways to press the cost of GHG reduction are avoiding to enlarge in the peat, using organic fertilizer, and composting EFBB and PME. “The key is to avoid new planting in the peat,” he emphasized.

He also mentioned, there are procedures in GHG assessment for the new planting. From the land use, there are some options, such as, develop the areas besides in the peat or focus to develop in mineral land. (T2)
