CPO Demands in Ramadhan days Are not Better

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – If in some last years, in every Ramadhan days the crude palm oil (CPO) demands significantly increased, in 2018, the CPO demands are only from the countries having muslim citizens the most, such as, Bangladesh, Middle East countries, and Pakistan. While the western countries decrease their demands.

According to Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA), the goal export countries mostly decreased their CPO import in April 2018 from Indonesia, specially, China, India, European Union, andUnited States of America.

In April 2018, the total CPO volume, including biodiesel, oleofood, andoleokimiadecreased 5% or from 2,53 milliontons. “Compared to the last period, the CPO exports from January – April 2018 reached 10,24 milliontonsor decreased 4% compared to the same period in 2017 that reached 10,70 milliontons,” Chairman ofIPOA, Joko Supriyono said in the breaking the fasting day ceremony with some media in Jakarta where InfoSAWIT also attended on Wednesday (30/5/2018).

The decreasing export volume influenced the export values reaching US$ 7,04 billionor decreased about 13% compared to 2017that reached US$ 8,06 billionin the same period.

This was unusual phenomenon because heading to Ramadhan days, India increased its CPO demands. But in the first quarter of 2018, it did not happen. “This might be happening because the increasing high import tariff in the country,” Joko said.

CPO exports from Indonesia to India decreased since March 2018. In April the exports decreased 15%, or from 408,65 thousandtonsin Marchto be 346,28 thousandtonsin April.Year on year (yoy), in the first quarter, the exports to India decreased 24% or decreased 570,89 thousandtonsor from 2,37 milliontonsin Januari-April 2017 decreased 1,80 milliontons in the same period in 2018.

Meanwhile European Union decreased its CPO demands reaching 17% or from 461,24 thousandtonsin Marchto be 385,10 thousandtonsin April. In the first quarter 2018, the CPO imports decreased 312,19 thousandtonsor about 16% compared to the same period in 2017, or from 1,90 milliontonsto be 1,59 milliontons.

The CPO exports from Indonesia toUnited States of America(USA) in 2018 reached 62,16 thousandtonsor decreased 42% compared toMarchthat reached 106,57 thousandtons. The decreasing imports in USA might happen for the much soybean oil stock in the country as the impact of retaliation of China to USA by implementing the expensive tax to the imported products from China and China does revenge by making expensive tariff to imported soybean oil from USA.
