InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA –Until now Indonesia is still as the number one palm oil producer in the world so it needs to develop more with the society by the partnership scheme in the future.
The palm oil plantation companies should help the people’s plantation to increase the productivity, both by selecting superior seeds, and the plantation improvement. “The people’s plantation plays more important role in palm oil industries nationally,” Chairman of Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA), Joko Supriyono said in the Asian Agriculture and Food Forum (ASAFF) 2018 in Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).
He also said, Indonesia still becomes the biggest palm oil producer in the world within the total production in 2017 reaching 42,04 million tons. Of the total production, about 31,05 million tons were exported. “Within the exports and production, palm oil is the commodity giving the biggest exchange to the country reaching US$ 22,9 billion,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Thursday (28/6/2018).
Some countries to palm oil exports from Indonesia in 2017 were, India (7,62 million tons), European Union (5,03 million tons), china (3,73 million tons), Africa (2,28 million tons), and others.
"There are increasing palm oil demands up to 5 million tons in every year in the world. As the highest productive vegetable oil, palm oil plays important role in the context of food security in the world,” he said.
But he continued, palm oil sector in Indonesia faces two big challenges. The first is the external about the negative campaign, sustainability issues, and the market acceptance namely in the developed countries. The second is the internal about the productivity, and efficiency which may be low and the people’s plantation development.
To answer the challenges, palm oil plantation companies should make partnerhsip and help the people’s plantations to increase their productivity. “The companies should do Research and Development Program, mechanism, and automacy and should be taught to the people’s plantations to increase their productivity too,” Joko said.
