3 Reasons for the Indonesia’s Legislators to Defend the Smallholders

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA –The representative of Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit, (SPKS), Sabarudinsaid, the Indonesia’s Legislators should take side to the people namely about the smallholders’ capacity development to increase the productivity. There are three reasons (notes) for the Legislators.

The first, about the Palm oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (PFMA). He thought, the Legislators should take side to the smallholders about PFMA. In addition, the members of Legislators must know well about the fund distribution. For example, the fund is distributed to the (palm oil  plantation) companies more than the smallholders who need the fund. “The smallholders face lots of issues. The fund from PFMA, at least, could solve some issues. The Legislators should actually defend it,” he recently said.

The second, the Legislators should be active. If it is needed, they could call for PFMA (to question) why the fund is given and used to biodiesel procurement and in the end, it is for the companies.

“There are lots of data that the Legislators could use. For example, from Corruption Eradication Commission. The finding clearly showed that the fund in PFMA breaks the Regulation of Plantation. This could be the base for them to urge PFMA to evaluate their work.

The third, about the replanting program for the smallholders. The target is that the program would cover 185 thousand hectares (ha). But why it is not realized yet? He thought, the Legislators needs to check what issue to face. For instance, about the complex conditions. “Why could the subsidy to the company be fast? This is a big question. We do not want that (the program) to the smallholders should have lots of conditions while it should not to the companies,” he said. (T2)
