The Government is Committed that Palm Oil is Environmental

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA –The government and the stakeholders keep trying to show that palm oil in Indonesia is the safe commodity to the health. It is not the factor of tropical forest damages (deforestation), not the factor to decrease diversity, not the factor to the fire in the forest and areas, and not the source of increasing CO2 emission which contributes to the global warming and climate change.

Deputy in Food and Agriculture Coordination, Coordinator Ministry in Economy, Musdhalifah Machmud said, palm oil has the strategic role for the economy in this country. “The mainstay commodity plays its role for the exchange, hires the workers, conquers the poverty, and increases the economy in many regions within multiplier effect,” she said in the 6th International Oil Palm Conference (IOPC), Tuesday (17/7/2018) in Medan.

The data showed that palm oil contributed to the biggest exchange reaching (US$ 23 billion)for Indonesia in 2017. It also contributed to the gross national products nationally reaching 3,47%.

Then about 16 million workers live from palm oil, and it enlivens the other industries. Palm oil also plays its role to conquer poverty in 190 districts, influences to decrease the rank of poverty about 6 million men in the villages in 2005-2016.

Not only that, seen from the outcome of the villagers from the Central Bureau of Statistic in 2016, it is estimated, the transaction among the villagers (smallholders) in palm oil and the fishermen reached Rp 13,7 billion per year, with the farmers reachingRp 54,6 billlion per year, and with the breeders reaching Rp 24,1 billion per year. It means, palm oil is the economic stimulus in the villages.

There are some that the government has done to support one of many strategic commodity in Indonesia. The first, by making Palm oil Plantation Fund Management Agency within the goal, to make better price, empower the downstream industries, and develop sustainable commodity.

The second, by making the Smallholders’ Replanting Program to increase the people’s productivity. The third, by making and implementing Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) which is the standard test to obey the regulations in Indonesia and the certification regulation which refers to International Standardization Organization.

Musdhalifah also mentioned that the government really appreciates the contribution of research institution, including Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI) orPusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS)to fight for the black campaigns in palm oil industries.

“The research institutions play important role in the management, administration, and development in sustainable palm oil in this country,” she said.

She also emphasized that palm oil should be seen not only from the big industrial interests but it is also the interest for millions of smallholders that have the same agenda in the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).(T2)
