InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA -After Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA) has not becoming the member of RSPO in 2011, there had been many discussions done nationally to make the sustainability standard as part of the industrial development nationally too because in 2009, Indonesia has made Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certificate which mandatorily runs.
In 2013 precisely, the government of Indonesia gave ISPO certificate to 10 palm oil plantation companies nationally. These became the pioneers of ISPO implementation in this country. So every company should have full responsibility to run ISPO mandatorily.
Chairman of ISPO Secretariat, AzisHidayat explained, ISPO is an obligation to the palm oil plantation nationally. Based on the principles and criteria in ISPO, every palm oil plantation company should obey the regulations and laws that the government obliges to every palm oil plantation business.
The smallholders have plantations too. He thought that the people’s palm oil plantations which are sporadically next to the companies’ areas still need supports to cultivate theirs. So the smallholders still need the development and partnership with the plantation companies.
Besides the land legality is the main issue for the smallholders’ palm oil plantations so the ISPO certificate process is difficult to do because the plantation legality is one condition to be fulfilled. “The smallholders still face the big issue about area legality to get the ISPO certificate,” he said.(T1)
