Prevent the Weed Resistance in Plantation

InfoSAWIT, BOGOR - It is famously known that to control the weeds could be done in many ways, such as, manually, chemically, or biologically. But in agriculture or commercial plantation where the areas are vast, it is normal to use chemical to control the weeds, such as, using kinds of herbicide.

Of course, it needs to be wise to apply chemical ingredients to control the weeds and it should be done according to the standard guidance which every herbicide producer makes. This will be positive to control the weeds.

But it will be different if the weed application is done randomly which could make the weed resistant. So it needs the strategy and efforts so that the weeds will not be resistant to herbicide.

Prof. Soekisman Tjitrosemito from Weed Science Society of Indonesia, SEAMEO Biotrop, said, weed resistance happens for the continuous application of one kind of herbicide. It is suggested to apply the alternative herbicide. “It needs to rotate the herbicide application to prevent weed resistance,” Prof. Soekisman recently said in Bogor

In general, the rotation could be done once a year so it could control the weeds maximally. The weeds resistance in Indonesia, Soekisman thought, did not happen yet. But it needs to be done in the first place for it could run for 20 years.

Midzon LI Johannis of PT Syngenta Indonesia thought, controlling the weeds could be done by Integrated Weed Management (IWM). It is the combination of some technics within the most economical costs.

But Midzon noted, applying chemical ingredients to control weeds – using one herbicide for it is effective and efficient in the middle term and long term – would make the weed resistance too. “If the weed resistance happens, the cost will be more expensive to spend for it is hard to control,” he said in Bogor.
