Sinar Mas and OFI Cooperate Again to Release Orangutan

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, the integrated palm oil plantation company from the upstream to downstream sector re – cooperates with Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) to rehabilitate and conserve orangutan.

This time, the cooperation would be about to educate the people and the students that it is important to take care of the society, ecosystem aroud the plantation and orangutan.

The protection of endangered animals in Indonesia is the same commitment of the company by publishing Forest Conservation Policy in 2011, not enlarging but conserving the high conservation values. These two are regulated in the Social and Environmental Policy of Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) as the guidances to the daily operational.

The commitment was re-emphasized by implementing Zero Tolerance Policy in 2012 that forbids to hunt, hurt, have, or kill the rare, endangerd animals. These are the basics every employee in Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food to know the program of wild animal conservation, including orangutan.

The continous cooperation between Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food with OFI for 2018-2021 was made by signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

President Director Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food, Daud Dharsono said, Friends of the Orangutan and OFI would be the third time to run. Ever since the program run in 2011 to 2017, the company and OFI tried to conserve the biodiversity by releasing 100 orangutan in total. “Now we would continue the cooperation and would end in 2021. We would release about 60 orangutan, do education, and give operational help, such as, cars, speedboat, and klotok,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT, Thursday (30/8/2018).

He also mentioned, the company is committed to support the orangutan conservation in Indonesia, both through the policy of the company and other cooperation with organizations/instances having skill in biodiversity conservation, such as, OFI that rehabilitates and releases orangutan.

Meanwhile, founder of Orangutan Foundation International, Dr. Birute Galdikas said, her side does appreciate the cooperation. She thought, the cooperation would be about training the employees of the company, giving counselling to the people and the students, and also releasing orangutan. “Since we did the cooperation in 2011, I know that Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food really wants to conserve the environment, and conserve orangutan,” Birute said.
