InfoSAWIT, NUSA DUA – Ministry of Trade, Enggartiasto Lukita said that palm oil plantation is not the biggest factor of deforestation in the world.
Based on The Impact of EU Consumption on Deforestation in 2013, agricultural sectors, such as, soybean (19%) and corn became the contributors of deforestation in the world. The palm oil plantation just contributed 8% of the total deforestation in a whole.
He also said, as one commodity having the biggest contribution ot the exchange, palm oil plays important role to develop the economy.
“Palm oil is important for the world mostly needs it and it is the biggest exchange provider in Indonesia,” he said in his opening speech in 14Th Indonesian Palm Oil Conference (IPOC) and 2019 Price Outlook in Nusa Dua, Bali, (1/11/2018), where InfoSAWIT also said.
Quoting from Center on Food Security and the Environtment, Stranford University in 2016, Minister of Trade said, since 2001-2010 palm oil industries become the sources of living for 21 million men of Indonesia.
Palm oil industries support the economic progress for 5,3 million workers in the production and take 10 million men of Indonesia for the poverty threat. “It is successful to lift up 1,3 million poor men in the villages in Indonesia,” he said.
He also made sure that the government would focus to increase its productivity within the principles, to increase the people’s welfare and maintain the environmental quality of life. In addition, based on the statistics, until now 41% of the plantation belong to the smallholders. “It means, the people’s (plasma smallholders) economy really depends on the palm oil industries. (T2)
