Palm Oil Plantations Provide Conservation Areas about 350 thousand Football Fields

InfoSAWIT, KUALA LUMPUR – Non-government multi-stakeholder, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) released the Work and Operation in 2018. In the report, 265,000 hectares have been for the high conservation value (HCV) or about 350 thousand football field. The numbers derived from the members of RSPO and increased 39% from the previous year.

The other topic in the report is that the developing countries in Latin America and Africa, as the members of RSPO provided HCV and increased about 83% (66.229 hectares) and 132% (18.043 hectares). The members of RSPO totally have 3,2 million hectares of certified areas on 30 June 2018. These represented certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) production about 13,6 million tons. The African countries have had increasing certified RSPO areas about 94% and 15% in Latin America.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) RSPO, Datuk Darrel Webber, claimed that the dioxide emission reduction through green - house gas assessment since 2015 reached 11o thousand cars in a year. “I appreciate our members for their efforts and hope that it would continue,” he said in the official statement toInfoSAWIT, Monday (12/11/2018).

RSPO now had about 3.920 members in 91 countries up to 30 June 2018 – It increased 15% from the previous year. The membership of RSPO surpassed 4.000 from 92 countries in October, a history for RSPO.

The 16th annual Roundtable Conference (RT16) would be in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on 13-15 November 2018. The theme of theconference would have a theme, “Sebuah Komitmen yang Diperbarui untuk Mencapai Transformasi Pasar” or A Renewed Commitment to Realize Market Transformation.

In the annual meeting, the representative of palm oil industries globally would meet and discuss the challenge and opportunity in sustainable palm oil chain of stock, and the key elements of the latest Principles and Criteria (P&C) of RSPO, such as, the ways to stop deforestation, protect the peat, strengthening human rights, labor, sustainable development, special development from the independent smallholders which would be ratified in November 2019.

Besides, the members of RSPO would have general assembly the 15th (GA15) to vote the resolution, including the ratification of the new proposals of P&C. If they are ratified, there would be P&C RSPO 2018. (T2)
