IndoAgri Commits to take the Independent Smallholders to Cultivate Sustainably

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Four years ago was the important moment for palm oil plantation company, IndoAgri Resources Ltd., which is the subsidiary of PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk.

It was the moment that the company has committed so that every chain of stock should implement the sustainable practices, including the smallholders who are in partnership to supply the fresh fruit bunch to the company.

Since 2014 the company has analyzed the gap to the smallholders in PT PP London Sumatra Tbk., in cooperation with IDH Sustainable Trade.

As the result the independent smallholders in partnership with PT PP London Sumatra Tbk., were chosen to get the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certificate.

Sustainability Manager IndoAgri Resurces Ltd, Yuli Sari Yeni said that the reason to choose the smallholders in partnership with PT PP London Sumatra Tbk., is that they are more prepared and have capability to implement the sustainable cultivation.

She also mentioned, the scheme would not be implemented in a whole because there are 34 unions within the area reaching about 32 thousand hectares (ha) in South Sumatera.

Of the numbers, the company did selection and 6 unions were chosen. The unions were believed to be able to implement sustainable cultivation based on the principles in RSPO. After re-analyzing, only 4 unions were chosen. “We see, of the unions that they have credits or not or other issue. So for this moment, we choose 4 only,” she said in Jakarta.

After succeeding the four getting RSPO certificate, the company is taking others to get the same certificate. For example, there are three unions listed to be the members of RSPO which are about to get the certificate. They are,  KUD Permai Jaya which has palm oil plantations reaching 684 ha and involved about 173 families in District of Lahat, South Sumatera.

KUD Mekarsari which has palm oil areas reaching 502 ha and involved 182 families in District of Musi Rawas, South Sumatera, and KUD Sangkan Urip in District of Musi Rawas, South Sumatera which has palm oil areas reaching 639 ha and involved 328 families.

Yuli also explained that KUD Permai Jaya and KUD Mekarsari have processed the audit in RSPO while KUD Sangkan Urip is in pre-audit. “So the total unions implementing the principles and criteria in RSPO are 7,” she said. (T2)
