IPOA - JABPUSI: Agreed to Increase the Welfare of the Palm oil Plantation Labors

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA- Executive Secretary of Jejaring/Serikat Pekerja Buruh Sawit Indonesia (JAPBUSI) Nursanna Marpaung said that in total the labors who work in the chain of palm oil stock could be 16,2 million, including the direct ones in the plantations both private and enterprises that could be 3,75 million men. “There are about 2,2 million smallholders,”  she said in the dialogue with Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA) and JAPBUSI in the commemoration of Mayday in Hotel Crown Jakarta, Friday (26/4/2019).

She also supported the government to struggle for palm oil from the discriminatory and negative campaigns. In addition, palm oil industries have negative issues, such as, the labors, salary, and welfare.

Chairman in Labors, IPOA, Sumarjono Saragih said that his side keeps supporting the cooperation between IPOA and APBUSI which runs since 2017 to fight for the negative. The cooperation is to improve and increase the quality work and the welfare of the planters by socializing, training, and sharing best practice.

“We do understand that sustainability is a process that the dispute could take place,” he said. That is why the social dialogue, the bipartite and tripartite to solve the dispute needs to be strengthened. “By not blaming or humiliating one to another,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT.

IPOA and JAPBUSI take the input from many sides, including the stakeholders, both in the national and international level to share information, knowledge about the sustainable governance. The two associations are ready to cooperate to increase the welfare of the labors in palm oil industries. It is hoped that the positive could support the role of palm oil industries and the agenda of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

In the dialogue, not only the stakeholders and the smallholders, the government is taken to be actively involved to improve and increase the conditions of the smallholders and the labors in Indonesia by publishing the regulations which specify the labors in palm oil plantations.

JAPBUSI is the association that consists of 4 confederatoions, such as, konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Seluruh Indonesia atau CAITU, konfederasi Serikat Pkerja Seluruh Indonesia (Rekonsiliasi), konfederasi Serikat Buruh Sejahtera Indonesia, and konfederasi Serikat Buruh Muslimin Indonesia, including  9 labors union federations which have base in palm oil industries in Indonesia.
