Dilemma of Smallholders’ Replanting Program in Riau

InfoSAWIT, PEKANBARU - For the governor of Riau, H Syamsuar, increasing the smallholders’ welfare is one focus of his era to lead the province. In addition, Riau has been the province where the people mostly cultivate palm oil plantation the most.

Unfortunately for it was planted in 1990s or in the previous years, the people’s plantations are not better anymore like theirs in 25 years ago. This is the reasons to run the smallholders’ replanting program (SRP).

When he was a regent of Siak, H. Syamsuar directly saw the people’s plantations to convince that SRP is the best way to get better income.

He also admitted, the people were in dilemma. The reason was that if theirs are cut off, there would be no income. But he convinced that there are lots of to get income as long as the plantations are immature.

“The people actually would do the SRP but they were confused. I convinced them that it could run though it is not easy to do,” he said when doing the first harvest in Village of Delima Jaya, Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau where InfoSAWIT did attend. (T2)
