Need Strategies Nationally for the Food Security from Palm Oil

InfoSAWIT, BOGOR - Prof. Purwiyatno Hariyadi of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) explained about the consent of world consumers to food oil, including palm oil in the 1st International Conference on Sustainable Plantation (ICSP) within the theme "Better Environment with Better Prosperity, Harmonization of Humankind and Nature".

In his presentation, Prof Hariyadi told the new standard in Codex that the oil food producers should do. Though this is the obligation for the members, the Codex membership itself is voluntary. He thought that it is important to fulfill the standards in Codex because they would be used if there is trade barrier internationally, such as, in the trial of World Trade Organization (WTO).

He also explained that the transportation and packaging are the big issues for the food oil in crude palm oil (CPO) – base. That is why the refinery industries should improve to fulfill the will of global consumers.

“If the refinery industries could not fulfill the standards in Codex, the CPO and the derivative demands could reduce,” he said in Bogor, Tuesday (20/8/2019).

Prof. Purwiyatno also thought as the biggest CPO producer in the world and produced by the smallholders for more than 41%, it is important for Indonesia to improve and fulfill the Codex standards that universally run. (T1)
