Mehendra: The Government Would Do the Best to Palm Oil Diplomacy

InfoSAWIT, NUSA DUA – The government of Indonesia makes the negative campaign to palm oil industries nationally as the urgent agenda to solve. The negative campaigns keep accusing palm oil industries as the un-environmental and unsustainable ones.

The government would do the best to palm oil diplomacy and do many things to face the palm oil challenges nationally. It needs solutions to the negative campaign, namely from European Union.

Vice Minister of External Affairs, Mahendra Siregar told that in Indonesian Palm Oil Conference (IPOC) 2019 and 2020 Price Outlook in Nusa Dua Bali (1/11/2019).

He thought that European Union should consider and admit the ways to improve sustainable cultivation by ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil), namely in the review of criteria in ILUC (Indirect Land Use Change) that is about to run. The government would encourage the world not to see the ‘environment footprint’ on other kinds of vegetable oil just as it is in palm oil industries in Indonesia.

On the other hand the credibility of environmental issue may become the way to protect, namely to protect and promote rapeseed which grows in Europe.

“We would approach, clarify, make initiative to encourage the system fulfillment which support the sustainability of every vegetable oil that should be seen in all aspects, namely in the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and palm oil could be the pioneer. We could guarantee the global demands responsibly from the sustainable palm oil. It needs to know other kinds, such as, the chemical usage to vegetable oil in Europe,” he said in the official statement to InfoSAWIT recently.

He thought that the world should fairly see palm oil because it is not fulfill the demands in Europe only but also the world markets which keep being more and more as same as the increasing population. The needs of vegetable oil should be responded by the procurement of sustainable vegetable oil. Now palm oil is the main issue as the sustainable one for it has 6 – 10 times bigger productivity and more efficient areas than other kinds of vegetable oil in the world.

From the trade policy, the system in multilateral trade needs review and should reflect the interests of the developing countries adequately, including in Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) Indonesia – European Union. The regionalism is important too. Asean and the surrounding are the main market chances in the world.

Crude palm oil should have the specific spot in the bilateral, regional, free trade agreement, multilateral discussion, negotiation, and agreement agenda. But the domestic absorption would be the main agenda of the government.

“Now the biggest CPO market in the world in Indonesia because we are the biggest consumer. It needs to fulfill the domestic needs well to the edible oil and its derivative. In the next ten years, CPO production would be absorbed in the domestic and the rests, or derivatives would be exported,” he said. (T1)
