Palm Oil Sector Needs the Institution equal to Ministry

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - Until now the fresh fruit bunch (FFB) produced by the smallholders is still determined by the markets. There is no model of protection to protect theirs from the market situation as it is regulated in the Laws No. 19 / 2013 about the Protection and the Empowerment of the Smallholders (Farmers).

The government has no lists of middlemen who gather the FFB from the smallholders. If there is, there would be regulation to determine the independent smallholders’ FFB.

Unfortunately General Secretary of Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS), Mansuetus Darto said that the government is not too serious to deal with the industry. The 2 million hectare – peat has Wetland Restoration Board while the palm oil plantations reaching 14 million hectares have no institutions itself.

“Palm oil is coordinated in the government level which is equal to the head of sub. There are no many plantation agencies in the regions but livestock and agriculture,” he recently said.

He also said that it is better if palm oil sector is directly coordinated and managed by one institution supervised by the president. “If not, make the institution, such as, general directorate of palm oil, or palm oil agency which is equal to ministry led by the president,” he said. (T2)
