Muba Prepared the Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation Road Map

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA - As one district that is committed to implement the sustainable development policy, District of Musi Banyuasin (Muba) is the good role model. The district wants to maintain the environment and empower the economy as well.

According to the district, the areas reached 1,433,812 hectares (ha). The palm oil plantations reached 341 thousand ha where they were divided that 56% were cultivated by the companies and about 40% were cultivated by the people. 90 thousand ha might be in the forest regions. The high conservation values and high carbon stock areas may lay about 648.417 ha.

The people’s palm oil cultivation in the district has some issues, such as, the long dry season, the cheap fresh fruit bunch (FFB), the fluctuation of FFB price, the lack of capital, the fertilizers, the difficult superior seeds to get, the expensive nursery, the pesticide/herbicide, the FFB price is not determined by the smallholders, the bad infrastructures.

Still based on the district, the smallholders (farmers) income is not good enough to earn their livings. From the survey to about 1.724 smallholders (farmers) in 9 villages in Sub district of Lalan, revealed that, 24.68% respondents got less than 1 million rupiah and 55,65% respondents got about Rp 1 – 5 million.

To get the solution on the issues, the District of Muba agreed to publish Plantation Roadmap. In the policy based on what InfoSAWIT got, the regional government would make inventory and zone of the sustainable plantations which are supported by the postponement and review of the license. (T2)
