InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The pandemic of corona virus (Covid-19) has infected millions of men, has forced the economy in the world to decrease because of the limited economic activity to prevent its spread.
The same thing happens in palm oil sector. The pandemic influences the activity in the plantation, namely where the independent smallholders cultivate.
Senior Advisor of Forum Petani Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan Indonesia (FORTASBI), Rukaiyah Rafik said that the limited distribution and markets influence the pesticide and fertilizer price.
The fresh fruit bunch (FFB) collectors or loading ramps even take opportunity from the issue about big scale social distancing. The FFB produced by the smallholders gets cheaper than it that the local plantation decided.
The smallholders getting Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certificates showed different situation. In the early of 2020, they got the selling incentive from certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). The fund is used to help the situation in the pandemic. Some smallholders’ groups could go on and even help the people around besides their members during the pandemic.
According to Manager Smallholders Program Indonesia, RSPO, Guntur Cahyo Prabowo, palm oil getting RSPO certificate has given advantages for 26 groups within the members about 6.000 smallholders during the pandemic through the credit selling.
US$ 1,5 million has been distributed to 30 groups of independent smallholders having RSPO certificate since May 2019-2020.
Besides, he continued, in the pandemic, the certificate is the helper for them to face the uncertain time. “The condition of certificate which obliges them to have good institution and financial plans help them to increase their bargaining offer position during the pandemic,” he said in the online discussion that InfoSAWIT did join, Thursday (18/6/2020).
