Palm Oil Moratorium Needs Political Will

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – Executive Director of Wahana Lingkungan Hidup (Walhi), Nur Hidayati said that her side knows that the implementation of President’s Regulation No. 8 / 2018 about Palm oil Moratorium for three years is not maximal still.

The policy is the government’s good effort to do and the people support it. “Until now the palm oil plantation canopy nationally reached 16,4 million hectares (ha) or about 1,2 times larger than Java Island. How wide would it be?” she said in the webinar that InfoSAWIT recently joined

The palm oil moratorium is not about to improve the license only but also to restructure up to the basic level. In addition, the overlapping issue still hits the industries. “Besides the child labors, the female workers, and unfair partnership between the plasma and main companies because the promises are not realized, it is clear that the problems are complex,” she said.

She thought that every issue could not be solved by one regulation only. The regulation should be prolonged by giving new indicators. For all these years, the moratorium runs without good political will from the related ministries. (T2)
