In the Pandemic, It is Important to Prevent the Deforestation to have the Healthier People

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – It is afraid that the Covid-19 would spread in the same time when the fire takes place. The both could impact to the people’s health. The hospitals have much burden from the Covid-19 patients. This would be worse if the numbers of patients would be more because of the fire. The regional government would have focus to handle the disasters.

Minister of Health, Indonesian Republic, Prof. Nila Moeloek in the recent webinar told that the smoke could be from the cigarette, the fire and would bother the lungs for breathing the oxygen. “We do hope to breathe oxygen smoothly to our lungs but it is Covid-19. This would be very risky when we breathe the smoke from the fire,” she said.

The data from the government revealed that 64.600 hectare areas were in flame in January - July 2020. Yayasan MADANI Berkelanjutan analyzed that the fire got wider from 18.000 hectares in July to be 84.000 hectares in August. In September 2020, in the dry season which turns to rainy season, the hotspots got decreasing in numbers.

Apart from the reality that the weather is difficult to forecast in this year and the temperature is not as hot as it was, the increasing data of the potential fire showed that the government needs to be aware and should do maximally to stop the worse disaster. This could be worse if the public awareness to keep the environment and forest remain good is minimum, and the law enforcement for the corporates and the monitoring system do not run well.

Executive Director of Yayasan Madani Berkelanjutan, Muhammad Teguh Surya thought that the fire case in Indonesia should be a consideration because many factors make it besides the weather, such as, the canopy and the broken forest and peat.

“Yayasan MADANI analyzed that for the last five years, from 2015 to 2019, 5,4 million hectares of the forests and areas were in flame. There were three factors influencing the increasing or decreasing fire in one region, such as, the first, the change of canopy; the second, the license; and the third, the broken function of peat ecosystem. It needs the right mitigation and anticipation to handle with the fire, such as, protecting the forests, improve the peat, and make sure the obedience level from the license owners to prevent the fire,” he said.

Besides, the worry about the fire and Covid-19 pandemic should be added by Drafts of Cipta Kerja (Omnibus Law) which many groups of people disagree. The draft would be potential to damage and eliminate the forests in Indonesia where the people live in and around, and the diversity in those.

The government, legislators, and related ministries and agencies need to stop discussing the Draft of Cipta Kerja for the people. It would be the loss if it is announced and inaugurated. Yayasan MADANI thought that the natural forests would be faster to vanish.

There would be five provinces that would lost the natural forests because of the deforestation if it is inaugurated, such as, Central Java, Bangka Belitung, South Sumatera, Jambi, and Riau. The other provinces would lost all natural forests out of the peta indikatif penundaan pemberian izin baru (PIPPIB) because of the deforestation, such as, Central Kalimantan, Aceh, Nusa Tenggara Barat, West Kalimantan, West Sumatera, South Kalimantan, and Jambi. Not only the forest, the natural conservation getting the bad impact, but also some sectors in our country would do to, such as, the marine, the fishery, the economy, and others.

It has strong relationship among the forest conservation, health, and the regulations of the government for the sustainability of our lives. If one of the three could not run harmoniously, it would significantly effect, not only to the environment, but also the people’s lives. it would end to pandemic. It needs to prevent the deforestation continuously, the people should get more education to care about the environment to make the healthier people of Indonesia. (T2)
