InfoSAWIT, RIAU – In the Covid-19 pandemic, seven villages in District of Indragiri Hilir, Riau Province got the economic profits from the red ginger cultivation. Many want to consume red ginger. The zero burning is increasing in the region.
Red ginger cultivation is one commodity of pertanian ekologis terpadu (PET), desa makmur peduli api (DMPA) program of PT. Bumipalma Lestaripersada (BPLP), the subsidiary of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food in the upstream sector. It runs since 2019.
From the research result for food industry Asia done by the research institution - AiPalette, the consumers in Indonesia choose red ginger to increase the body immunity. The increasing demands reached up to 138% in January to August 2020 compared to the same period in last year.
The goals of PET-DMPA program having more than 124 members are that the people should not do burning when cultivation (zero burning) but more environmental and productive cultivation to increase their economy from the additional income.
In the first phase, the groups could harvest 62 tons in total. Each group could get additional income for about 15 million rupiah per family. Red ginger was planted in the farmers’ area covering about ¼ hectare. “In the first place, we sold copra. But through the PET program of PT BPLP, we get additional income by harvesting red ginger planted in our areas,” the member of group Karya Tani Mas, Budi Santoso said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT recently.
PT. BPLP and regional government through Village Entreprises really support the same cultivation. Though it is in small scale and in the early stage, the villagers agreed to make ‘Forum Tani Makmur Mas’ as the place to cultivate the same cultivation.
“We do believe that red ginger is the good plantation to increase the villagers’ economy and minimize the dependence to new planting. In the Covid-19 pandemic, the consumers want the traditional medicine, such as, red ginger to increase their body immunity. Though it is in the first stage, we believe, this would be positive and last for some time,” CEO of Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food Riau, Franciscus Costan said.
To make the additional values, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food developed them making red ginger powder to have longer storage compared to un-processed ginger. The better packing could trigger the consumers to buy the product.
The red ginger processed to be powder is held in Village of Karya Tani. It is hoped that many villages could do the same. To support this, Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food put three experts, and supports the material, learning tools, seeds, vegetable seeds, honey pineapple seeds to the people when they replicate the program in their own areas. In the future, the success story of this program would be expanded to other villages around the operational of the company. (T2)
