InfoSAWIT, ACEH TIMUR – The field investigation team of Rainforest Action Network (RAN) revealed the latest deforestation in low area of rain forest in Leuser Ecosystem Area known as the World Capital City of Orangutan. The forest damage makes one Sumatran orangutan struggle for itself to survive because of the road construction and illegal logging in palm oil plantations of two companies, they are, PT. NY and PT PK.
A Sumatran orangutan is isolated and survives in the rest of forest which is fragmented because of road construction done by PT. NY in Aceh Timur since October 2020.
Thought the controversial practices of the two companies have been revealed, until now of palm oil buyers of the big companies, only Unilever announced that the two companies are in its postponement lists.
Nestlé, Mars, and Mondel?z fail to consider the deforestation violence to the public or put the two companies out of their supply lists. No world brand companies involves or communicates directly their needs to stop the deforestation and road construction which damage the forest and do illegal logging done by the two companies.
“The failure of Unilever, Nestlé, Mars, and Mondel?z to involved in the dialogue with the bad producers postponed the end of deforestation of palm oil production in Leuser Ecosystem Area and put the wide low area of rain forest in danger,” Director of Forest Policy, RAN, Gemma Tillack said, as in the official statement to InfoSAWIT.
The photo did show the continuous damages in two concession areas of the companies where endangered orangutan, elephant, rhino, and Sumatran tiger live and become the important water provider for the local people. Since the early of 2020, PT. NY was caught in red handed to cut off the trees from 1.624 hectares to be 1.411 hectares, or the total loss reaching 213 hectares when Covid-19 got worse in Indonesia and this increased the deforestation in low area of rain forest in Leuser Ecosystem Area.
In June 2020, the field investigators of RAN also found that the new planting and road construction done by PT. PK. The total concession areas of PT. PK reached 5.107 hectares. The company has cut off the trees from 437 hectares to be 374 hectares since in the early of this year. The satellite image showed the new planting in the two companies in April and May 2020. (T2)
