Palm Oil – Cow Integrated Program: The Bitter Portrait and Slogan of the Farmers

InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA – The above picture of cow breeder could represent the bitter life of breeders in District of Kotawaringin Barat. Years ago, the government claimed to support palm oil – cow integrated program.

The government planned the program because the people mostly do palm oil plantations and there are tens of palm oil factories that produce waste. Palm oil – cow integrated program targeted the cows belonging to the corporates and the people.

For the breeders joining the corporate which has POF, they could develop within the qualified and big numbers of animals. Some big breeders, such as, belonging to the subsidiary of PT Astra Agro Lestari, Tbk., (AALI) and Citra Borneo Indah (CBI) Group could run the program maximally. The abundant sources of woof give the chances to breed tens of cows in their plantations.

But it is different from the people’s breeding. The palm oil – cow integrated program is not a real thing. The ability of the people’s breeding could compete with the corporates’ breeding because the people knew how to process woof from palm oil waste, namely the solid and shell.

Sentra Peternakan Rakyat (SPR), for instance, and Sekolah Lapang Peternakan Rakyat got some materials to process the woof. Each breeder has the ability to do it.

In Sub district of Pangkalan Lada, there are about 450 breeders within two thousand cows. And other sub districts have the same. The numbers are relatively small than those developed by the corporate. The breeders are difficult to breed their cows because of the limited sources of woof.

For the woof is difficult to buy officially, they should ‘spanyol’ (half by stealing or ‘separo nyolong’) system. They should get the material from the black markets though every material could not be bought. The local breeders are afraid of being accused as the catchers.

The other irony is that the palm oil shell is more expensive bought by the local breeders than it in Java because if the breeders buy it to the POF in person, they should make DO which the price includes the shipping cost. Palm oil shell around the POF is about Rp 1.200 per kilogram while palm oil shell in Java is Rp 450 per kilogram. (YB. Zainanto Hari Widodo/Chairman of Sentra Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) Berkat Bersama)
