PalmOilMagazine - Referring to the data of General Directorate of Plantation, Ministry of Agriculture in 2020, palm oil plantations in Indonesia lay about 16,38 million hectares. Of the numbers, 53% are cultivated by the big private companies, 6% are cultivated by the public companies, and 53% are cultivated by the smallholders including the independent ones,
The numbers of smallholders in our country could be about 2,67 million family. Data from Forum Petani Sawit Berkelanjutan (Fortasbi) revealed that the independent smallholders in Indonesia could be about 4.379 men getting sustainable certification within the areas covering 11.917 hectares.
Until 2020, there have been 29 smallholders’ organizations in the form of groups, and associations in Sumatera and Kalimantan which the members have RSPO certificate. The smallholder certification schemes that independent smallholders should join are Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO), Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and International Sustainable Carbon Certification (ISCC).
Each scheme requires the certain conditions and characteristic that the smallholders should fulfill to get, including the numbers of members and width. It means that the strategies to expand the plantations and new members need consultation from certification institutions.
From the data published by Fortasbi, the numbers of independent smallholders that join new certification reach about 0,16% of total smallholders. In one side for the independent smallholders, the big gap invites those who do not get the certification still to join the process and to get the advantages from the certification.
On the other hand, for the independent smallholder organizations, the data could be the reference to multiply the new members and width of plantation so that the organization could be wider and more smallholders would join to get the advantages.
