PalmOilMagazine, BOGOR - Member of Commission IV Indonesian Legislators encouraged what Ministry of Agriculture is doing, to optimize smallholders’ replanting program (SRP) to strengthen food and energy sovereignty. Optimizing SRP could raise the economy in the village because it would not make palm oil go forward but also provide the new planting through intercrops with other plantations and the waste of trees could be new and renewable sources of energy.
"SRP would help the smallholders to improve their plantations to be more sustainable and qualified, and could reduce the risks to illegal new planting. Through SRP, the productivity of the smallholders could be increasing without new planting,” member of Commission IV Indonesian Legislators, Mindo Sianipar said in Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the theme “Optimalisasi Program Nasional Peremajaan Sawit Rakyat (PSR) dalam Mendukung Kedaulatan Pangan dan Energi” in Bogor, Thursday (27/5/21) as in the official statement to PalmOilMagazine.
Sianipar also mentioned SRP optimization could recover the economy in the village to increase the economy nationally.
“I do hope, we would not focus to the export chance but it needs to think how the commodity could be process and be exported. For instance, taro and porang should not be exported in raw materials. This is not good because other could develop the products to be seeds and our export could last for 3 or 4 years only,” he said.
For information, based on the study of Komite Upgrading Biomassa Indonesia (LKN KUBMINDO), palm oil tree waste which was not advantaged well where the ganoderm could develop and pests breed could be changed to be wood pellet with the equal quality with the wood materials, such as, sonokeling, sengon, albasia, kruing, meranti, and other hard wood, namely from calory kilo, sulfur, and ash level. The outcome of palm oil replanting upgrade after making bio pellet is 4800 to 5000 kilo calory per kilogram (kcal per kg). it means, wood pellet is the new renewable and environmental energy.
In the same spot, special staff of Minister of Agriculture, Prof. Imam Mujahidin Fahmid said, Indonesia has 16,38 million hectares (ha) of palm oil plantations; 6,72 million ha of the width belong to the smallholders (the people) and SRP potential would cover 2,78 million ha for the trees are not productive. Ministry of Agriculture keeps encouraging to optimize SRP to give advantage and present new plantings for other commodity which is in intercrops with palm oil.
“We have to think, what commodity could be in intercrops with palm oil and could be produced in short period, such as, soybean, and other beans to produce added values for the smallholders. They should get continuous income,” he said.
Director of Yearly Plantation and Freshness, Heru Tri Widarto said, optimizing SRP has the chance to encourage diversification through integration and synergy with other sectors besides increasing aspects in palm oil industries from the upstream to downstream sectors. SRP could be in intercrops for about 3 to 4 years, such as, corn, soybean, bean, porang, ginger, turmeric, and galangal.
“In energy sector namely new renewable energy, it needs to advantage palm oil trees which are wasted to be processed to be wood pellet with higher calory level as same as the wood materials. Many needs wood pellet as same as the way to reduce green – house gas emission to be net zero emission,” he said. (T2)
