Successfully Replaced Coal Power Plant with Palm Oil  Shell

Palmoilmagazine, SURABAYA - PT Pembangkit Listrik Negara (Persero) through its subsidiary PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB) successfully tested palm oil shell to substitute co-firing at Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Uap (PLTU) Steam Power Plant within its capacity reaching 2×7 megawatt (MW) Tembilahan in District of Indragiri Hilir, Riau Province.

Director of PT. PLN, Darmawan Prasodjo said, 100 percent biomass use in the high co-firing (HCR) was running on 15 June. This was the first time and the answer of future clean energy in Indonesia.

As one program in PT PLN, “Green Booster”, Darmawan continued, co-firing could be supporting the new renewable mixture target nationally.

“100 percent biomass firing is the consistency of PT PLN Group to deliver better clean energy in Indonesia. as the pioneer, I hope the success would trigger and motivate other electric powerplants to implement it,” he said, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.

PT PLN keeps optimizing co-firing up to be reaching 1,8 giga watt. From 52 spots to implement in 2025, biomass co-firing has been implemented in 31 spots by advantaging 175 thousand tons of biomass. This produced 185 GWh of clean energy and decreased 184 thousand tons of CO2.

“Co-firing acceleration is the real evidence that PT PLN is serious to support the government to reduce carbon emission in this country to realize neutral carbon target in 2060,” he said.

Director of Operational 1 PT PJB, Yossy Noval said when co-firing was tested at PLTU Tembilah, it was running in phase based on the procedures. The first phase started by using 25 percent of palm oil biomass as the fuel (coal) substitution on Sunday (12/6) until it was completely 100 percent, Wednesday (15/6). It was evaluated after conducting the test.

According to the same evaluation, the technical monitoring result showed that operational parameter was normal, the burden up to 7 MW could stably run. There was no load derating up to 100 percent biomass use. In the contrary, the data showed fuel flow improvement and percentage of NPHR was significant enough because palm oil shell has higher calories.

In the environmental aspect, palm oil shell has lower sulfur than coal. The emission result got decreasing. The shell derived from plantation waste, it has lower ash, and part of neutral carbon and would realize the better environment. (T2)
