DSNG and USAID SEGAR Collaborate in OCCA Program

Palmoilmagazine, JAKARTA – PT Dharma Satya Nusantara Tbk (DSNG) is in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development Sustainability Environmental Governance Across Region (USAID SEGAR) to plan and monitor Off-Concession Conservation Area (OCCA).

The program was made in the form of memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday (29/6/2022) which was signed by Chief Sustainability Officer DSNG, Denys Collin Munang and Chief of Party Chemonics International representing USAID SEGAR, Peter Doyle. The sign was witnessed by Director of Forest and Water Resource Conservation National Development Plan Agency, Nur Hygiawati Rahayu and Deputy Director of USAID for environment, Mark Newton.

Denys Collin Munang said, OCCA is one real program to realize the commitment of DSNG in sustainable palm oil practices. The program is part of commitment to green investment from &Green which was signed in March 2020 to realize landscape protection plan off – concession areas of the company.

“The collaboration is one significant action for us in DSNG as same as our intention to learn, conserve, and protect OCCA. DSNG is honored and happy to collaborate with USAID SEGAR in OCCA which is the first time for us,” he said after signing the MoU, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine, Wednesday (29/6/2022).

The collaboration and cooperation would cover two important regions to be conserved, they are, Village of Karangan Dalam (3.148 hectares/ha) and Village of Tepian Langsat (395 ha) in District of East Kutai, East Kalimantan Province.

The two regions are around DSNG’s palm oil plantations, have high conservation values, and highly degradation potential. Some village forests of Karangan Dalam and Tepian Langsat are degraded because of the fire in the forests and areas years ago.

The collaboration would last for three years (since 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2025). The program would cover three things, they are, arranging the village forest cultivation – including in collecting baseline of natural conservation, people’s social life and economy; increasing the capacity of Lembaga Pengelola Hutan Desa (LPHD); and monitoring and evaluating which would be running per semester.

“We would advantage the experience and technical knowledge which USAID SEGAR delivers to realize this significant projet. This reminds me to what Jacques Cousteau once said, ‘… for most of history, mand has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it,” Denys Colin Munang.
