Always Faces Issues : Palm Oil Trade to European Union

Palmoilmagazine, Hanung Wahyudi, Sawitfest 2021

Palmoilmagazine, JAKARTA – Palm oil export trade plays the important roles for the economy in Indonesia. Palm oil could be the main source of exchange to Indonesia, for instance, in 2021, the exports reached US$ 32,8 million within about 34,2 million metric tons. European Union is the traditional and strategic one in palm oil export for Indonesia.

Director of Responsible Palm Oil Initiative (RPOI), Rosediana said, palm oil trade faces many challenges in general, starting from the publication of Renewable Energy Directive 1 (RED-1); then RED-II within its Delegated Regulation (like government’s regulation in Indonesia).

Meanwhile Donald Siahaan of Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS) Medan told palm oil – biodiesel has many technical aspects, useful well in the domestic and abroad. Palm oil would be in high demands and it should be remaining expensive.

Petrus Gunarso of Dewan Pakar Persatuan Sarjana Kehutanan Indonesia (PERSAKI) told the issues delivered by European Union should stop the exports from Indonesia to the continent – which covered biodiversity, deforestation, and forestry policy in general.

Though the basic thing of the issue is climate change, each country should actually obey Paris Agreement – which was intense to establish NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) by each country. In fact, European Union took much wider environmental issue, rarely discussed the implementation of EU NDC in many discussion or debate.

Deforestation and land use change issues both direct and indirect become the implementation focus of RED II in Europe. The issues are packaged by the spirit to struggle for the conservation and preventing biodiversity loss. Of course, for hundreds of years the damage and loss of biodiversity take place. The fright of biodiversity loss is about to be delivered to developing countries as if, we did not claim their NDC implementation.

In general, unfair issues, discrimination, and fright of trade competition are normal to be taken into dispute when (one) countries are difficult in economy and after Covid-19 pandemic. Indonesia remains optimist that palm oil is good – good for Indonesia, the world, and also the environment. What is needed is that honesty, fairness, and equity to get free trade spirit in the globe.
