PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s creative and tourism industries are gaining new momentum through innovations in sustainable palm oil–based products. The Forum for the Development of Kampoeng Batik Laweyan (FPKBL) has marked a historic achievement with the successful development of a palm-based batik wax formula and the attainment of the RSPO Supply Chain Certification (SCC). This milestone affirms that tradition and artistry can coexist with globally recognized sustainability practices.

FPKBL’s journey does not stop there. The group has expanded its innovation by launching decorative and aromatherapy candles, developed with support from Daemeter. These products were showcased at INACRAFT 2025, held on 1–5 October at the Jakarta International Convention Center—the country’s largest craft exhibition and a flagship stage for Indonesia’s creative tourism appeal.

Complementing this achievement, SpaFactory Bali introduced its personal care line, BOEMI Botanical. This renowned Balinese brand has also earned RSPO SCC certification, underscoring that sustainability is not confined to the upstream palm oil sector but can also manifest in consumer-oriented downstream products. The presence of BOEMI Botanical adds depth to Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem, where wellness, creativity, and sustainability converge.

These successes were made possible through cross-institutional collaboration. WWF Indonesia and Trisakti University’s CECT provided guidance during the certification process, while Control Union, as the certification body, granted official endorsement through a certificate handover ceremony. This moment proves that sustainability can enhance the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), not only in domestic markets but also on the global stage.

Alpha Febela Priyatmoko, Chair of FPKBL, expressed his gratitude, “We thank RSPO, WWF Indonesia, CECT Trisakti University, Daemeter, and Control Union for their support. This commitment gives us confidence that creativity can go hand in hand with sustainability, opening doors to wider markets. For batik SMEs like ours, this achievement shows that sustainability is inclusive. It gives us renewed spirit to innovate and expand into international markets. This success is truly the result of collective work that could not have been achieved alone.”

Dr. M. Windrawan Inantha, Deputy Director of Market Transformation RSPO (Indonesia), emphasized the broader impact of this milestone. “This achievement marks the first step in increasing the consumption of sustainable palm oil products in Indonesia. RSPO certification is not only crucial for independent smallholders upstream, but equally vital for downstream SMEs such as FPKBL and SpaFactory Bali. With sustainability meeting creativity, we are opening doors to larger initiatives that connect sustainable supply chains from upstream to downstream. Creativity and sustainability can thrive together, and SMEs in the creative sector are making a tangible contribution to palm oil transformation.”

A highlight of INACRAFT 2025 was the Craft Talk session themed “Sustainability Meets Creativity.” The forum brought together supporting partners to share their experiences on integrating sustainability into local creativity. The session concluded with the official RSPO SCC certificate handover to FPKBL and SpaFactory Bali, a symbolic marker of a new era for sustainable palm oil–based SMEs in Indonesia’s creative industry.

Gayan Wejesiriwardana, Managing Director of Control Union Indonesia, added, “Certification for downstream SMEs proves that sustainability standards are accessible to small businesses. It serves as a bridge for SMEs to elevate their standing and build consumer trust. Local creativity can now stand alongside global standards. We believe that sustainability and competitiveness must be inclusive, so that small enterprises too can become part of a more ethical global market.”

The achievements of FPKBL and SpaFactory Bali demonstrate that sustainable palm oil products are no longer limited to commodity trade. They have evolved into value-added creations that enrich tourism and the creative industries. Batik wax, decorative candles, aromatherapy, and personal care products are now not just symbols of aesthetic refinement, but also tools of education and new attractions for both domestic and international consumers. These innovations showcase how Indonesia’s tourism sector can embrace sustainability, not only as a selling point but also as a commitment to a greener future. (P3)
