PALMOILMAGAZINE, KUTAI KARTANEGARA — Koperasi Perkebunan Belayan Sejahtera has marked a milestone in strengthening sustainability governance among smallholder plantations after securing a B rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a global non-profit that runs the world’s most comprehensive environmental disclosure system.
The achievement makes Belayan Sejahtera the first farmers’ cooperative in Indonesia to disclose environmental data globally through CDP—and to obtain the highest score in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) category. CDP’s assessment applies an independent and rigorous methodology, evaluating data transparency, environmental risk awareness, governance quality, and concrete actions to address climate change and environmental degradation.
In 2025, nearly 20,000 organizations were assessed, with more than 22,100 entities reporting their environmental performance through CDP. The database has become a key reference for global investors and buyers in assessing risks, opportunities, and supply-chain readiness amid the transition toward a low-emissions, deforestation-free economy.

Chairman of Belayan Sejahtera Cooperative, Jamaluddin, said the recognition reflects a fundamental shift in the role of farmer cooperatives within global supply chains.
“A B rating from CDP is not merely an administrative acknowledgment. It is a statement of intent,” he told Palmoilmagazine.com on Friday (19/12/2025). “We are proving that farmer cooperatives—often seen as peripheral players—can meet global environmental transparency standards traditionally dominated by large corporations.”
According to Jamaluddin, the decision to undertake global environmental disclosure was a deliberate and strategic move. “Becoming the first cooperative in Indonesia to disclose environmental data globally was a conscious choice. We chose transparency, even though it meant subjecting ourselves to strict and independent scrutiny,” he said.

He added that the achievement is the result of collective efforts by member farmers to implement responsible plantation management, protect landscapes, and align production with future climate and market demands. “This shows that sustainability is not an added burden—it is a core strategy for resilience and growth,” Jamaluddin stressed.
CDP is fully aligned with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework and manages the world’s largest environmental database. In 2025, 640 investors representing assets of more than USD 127 trillion requested CDP to collect data on environmental impacts, risks, and opportunities from organizations worldwide.
CDP CEO Sherry Madera described CDP scores as a critical signal for the global business and financial community. “CDP scores demonstrate a commitment to high-quality data that enables organizations to make economic decisions that are positive for the planet, enhance competitiveness, and strengthen long-term resilience,” she said.
For Belayan Sejahtera, the recognition is not the end point. The cooperative reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening governance, improving reporting consistency, and embedding global market compliance into day-to-day operations and on-farm practices.
“We invite other cooperatives, businesses, and supply-chain partners to stop delaying and start acting,” Jamaluddin concluded. “Environmental transparency is not the exclusive right of large companies—it is a shared responsibility if Indonesian agriculture is to remain relevant, credible, and competitive on the global stage.” (P2)
