PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Throughout history, the relationship between labors and stakeholders in the palm oil industry has often been marked by disharmony, leading to conflicts and challenges. Over the years, this industrial relationship has undergone various phases, from imperialist and authoritarian periods to the reformation era, and now democracy prevails.
Palm oil holds significant strategic importance, but it faces suppression and obstacles. Merely maintaining a harmonious relationship between labors and stakeholders is insufficient; it requires collaboration and productivity. By fostering synergy between these two groups, the palm oil industry can accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices.
Additionally, both labors and stakeholders need advocacy to combat the negative perception of palm oil on a global scale. By working together and advocating for the benefits and sustainability of palm oil, they can overcome the obstacles and contribute to a more positive and thriving industry.

The establishment of JAGA SAWITAN (Jejaring Ketenagakerjaan untuk Sawit Berkelanjutan) is the new place for labors and stakeholders that JAPBUSI (Jejaring Serikat Pekerja dan Buruh Sawit Indonesia) and Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA) established. Chairman of IPOA, Eddy Martonso accompanied by Sumarjono Saragih (Chairman of Human Resource Development) did introduction and dialogue (social) with figures of JAPBUSI that was led by Executive Secretary of JAPBUSI, Nursanna Marpaung on Tuesday, 18 July 2023 in the office of IPOA, Jakarta.
“The strong foundation between JAPBUSI and IPOA should keep going and developing. It means, not only the skin or relationship is good but it is realized by better employment practices heading to sustainable palm oil in Indonesia,” Eddy said, as in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com recently.
Sumarjono Saragih said that productive collaboration between JAPBUSI and IPOA in JAGA SAWITAN would be very strategic. “We have to be together to realize sustainable palm oil. This is the same with ILS (International Labor Standard). This is very important because 70% of palm oil were sold to many countries. Besides, trade and investment agreement trend in ILS has been the terms and conditions or agreement indicators,” Saragih said.
Nursanna Marpaung said, there are lots of work to improve and implement in JAGA SAWITAN. “Particularly to reinforce bipartite and tripartite, salary issue, social dialogue, and employment standards,” Nursanna Marpaung. (T2)
