PALMOILMAGAZINE, SOUTH PAPUA – The forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) sector is the world’s second-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions after energy and industry, accounting for 22% of total emissions. At the same time, it is also one of the most affected by climate change. Recognizing this, several companies in the FLAG sector have begun taking concrete steps to reduce their emissions, including Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group.

TSE Group, which consists of PT Tunas Sawa Erma, PT Berkat Cipta Abadi, PT Papua Agro Lestari in South Papua, and PT Gelora Mandiri Membangun in North Maluku, has officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). SBTi is a global program that helps companies set science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets. By joining this initiative in 2023, TSE Group has strengthened its commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

TSE Group Director, Luwy Leunufna, stated that the company has developed a roadmap to reach this target. Key initiatives include constructing biogas power plants at five locations, adopting electric vehicles (EVs), transitioning from biodiesel to biogas and solar power, and replacing chemical fertilizers with organic alternatives.

“These steps will be implemented gradually but consistently. We expect to see significant results by 2040, bringing TSE closer to achieving Net Zero Emissions,” Luwy said in a statement to Palmoilmagazine.com on Friday, March 21, 2025.

TSE Group’s participation in SBTi reached a new milestone when its roadmap was approved by SBTi on Thursday, February 13. According to SBTi’s official website, the company has set both short- and long-term targets. In the short term, TSE Group aims to reduce absolute GHG emissions from Scope 1 and 2 by 58.8% by 2034 compared to 2022, while Scope 3 emissions are targeted to decrease by 35% within the same period.

For the long term, TSE Group is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90% by 2050. The company has also reaffirmed its commitment to a no-deforestation policy across its entire supply chain. (P2)
