PALMOILMAGAZINE, PEKANBARU – Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has expressed strong support for state-owned plantation holding company PTPN III (Persero) and its subholding PTPN IV PalmCo to leverage Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificates (SPE-GRK) as a gateway to entering the international carbon market.

“This certificate proves that the agricultural sector is also capable of reducing emissions. Congratulations to the entire PTPN IV PalmCo team,” said Hanif, as quoted by Palmoilmagazine.com from Antara.

Hanif admitted he was initially skeptical about the plantation sector’s ability to contribute to emissions reduction, considering its high emission potential. However, PalmCo’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and its decarbonization efforts have demonstrated a serious push toward Indonesia’s net zero emissions (NZE) target by 2060.

Hanif also encouraged this achievement to be a benchmark for other palm oil companies across the country. He urged GAPKI Secretary General Hadi Sugeng to help replicate PalmCo’s success on a broader scale.

“Invite other companies to visit and learn directly from PalmCo’s biogas facility in Lubuk Dalam,” he said.

The SPE-GRK certificate was issued based on the performance of PalmCo’s Lubuk Dalam Biogas Power Plant (PTBg) in Siak, Riau, which was verified by the Ministry’s Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) team. The verification process confirmed a reduction of 33,799 tons of CO₂e over the past four years through the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME).

Hanif further encouraged the registration of the certificate in both national and international carbon markets to unlock new revenue streams for PTPN.

Meanwhile, Jatmiko Santosa, President Director of PTPN IV PalmCo, stated that this achievement reflects the company’s consistent commitment to developing renewable energy from waste and advancing a circular economy.

“This is just the beginning of our active participation in the carbon trading ecosystem, beyond just decarbonization,” said Jatmiko.

He added that PalmCo aims to certify two additional biogas facilities—PTBg Tapung in Riau and PLTBg Pasir Mandoge in North Sumatra. This initiative not only supports Indonesia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement but also enhances the global competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil.

“We want to prove that our palm oil products are sustainable, transparent, and meet global standards. This is a strategic move to counter negative stigma in the international market,” he stated.

Jatmiko reaffirmed PalmCo’s commitment to leading sustainability efforts in the plantation industry, delivering real benefits to the environment, society, and the national economy. (P3)
