PALMOILMAGAZINE, KUBU RAYA – The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) highlighted the need for stronger protection of women and children working in the palm oil sector. Speaking at the 5th Indonesian Palm Oil Smallholder Conference and Expo (IPOSC) on Wednesday (Sept 24, 2025), GAPKI’s Head of Human Resource Development, Sumarjono Saragih, underscored the importance of a shared commitment across the industry.

Sumarjono acknowledged that labor practices in palm oil often come under scrutiny, particularly regarding child labor and insufficient protection for women workers. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the country still has around 1.2 million child workers. “We must take this fact seriously. Neither farmers nor companies can ignore it. We need to counter negative perceptions with real action,” he said.

He stressed that safeguarding workers is not solely the responsibility of large corporations but of the entire palm oil ecosystem—farmers, businesses, suppliers, and transport providers alike. “It’s not enough for companies alone. Everyone must understand safe working conditions, protect women from violence, and ensure workers have proper social and health protections,” he added.

Beyond child labor, Sumarjono also addressed the risks of chemical exposure faced by plantation workers and the persistent issue of sexual harassment. He called on stakeholders to strengthen education, workplace safety, and health measures.

“The palm oil industry in Indonesia is not only about companies or farmers—it’s about people. Workers, women, and children deserve full protection. From this forum, let us reinforce our collective commitment,” he concluded. (P2)
