PALMOILMAGAZINE, JAKARTA – Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman has officially been inaugurated as a member of Indonesia’s National Energy Council (Dewan Energi Nasional/DEN), reinforcing the government’s push to place agriculture at the center of the country’s green energy transition.

The inauguration, led by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on Wednesday (January 28, 2026), was based on Presidential Decree No. 134P/2026 concerning the appointment of DEN members from stakeholder groups, and Presidential Decree No. 6P/2026 on government representatives within the council.

Following the ceremony, Amran emphasized his commitment to maximizing the vast potential of the agricultural sector to support national energy resilience and accelerate the transition toward renewable energy based on local resources.

“God willing, going forward we will optimize green energy from agriculture. The potential is enormous — from cassava, palm oil (CPO), sugarcane, and many other commodities,” Amran said after the inauguration.

He noted that as an agrarian nation, Indonesia holds a strategic advantage to become a major global player in bioenergy development. Agricultural commodities, he stressed, are capable not only of supporting domestic energy needs but also of strengthening national energy independence.

According to Amran, palm oil and sugarcane have already become the backbone of Indonesia’s biofuel program. Looking ahead, cassava will be actively promoted as a new alternative energy source with significant untapped potential.

“Palm oil and sugarcane are already running. Next, we will push cassava. This is one of our great national strengths,” he said.

Amran also highlighted the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the mandatory biodiesel policy, including the implementation of B50, which is expected to significantly reduce dependence on imported diesel.

“God willing, based on our coordination results, this year we will no longer import diesel because we are entering the B50 phase,” he stated.

The National Energy Council is a state institution tasked with formulating and coordinating Indonesia’s long-term, integrated national energy policy.

With Amran’s appointment to the council, the government expects stronger synergy between the agriculture and energy sectors in accelerating a sustainable energy transition.

Going forward, the Ministry of Agriculture will intensify downstream programs, develop energy-oriented commodities, and expand the cultivation of biofuel-producing crops through fully integrated upstream-to-downstream approaches.

These measures are expected to create greater added value for farmers, enhance national competitiveness, and support Indonesia’s long-term goals of achieving energy sovereignty and building a sustainable green economy. (P3)
