PALMOILMAGAZINE, MEDAN – Indonesia continues to strengthen its position as a global supplier of high-quality oil palm seeds, expanding its reach in the international plantation industry. Most recently, the Indonesian Quarantine Authority, through the Center for Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine of North Sumatra, facilitated the export of 10,500 germinated oil palm seeds of the DxP Dami G-2 variety to Colombia, Latin America.

The shipment, handled via the Kualanamu Service Unit, is part of a broader export quota of 300,000 seeds approved by the Indonesian government in April 2026.

Head of North Sumatra Quarantine, Prayatno N. Ginting, said that as of mid-June 2026, total realized exports had reached 60,500 seeds. Deliveries to Colombia will continue in stages through August, in line with the agreed schedule.

He noted that Colombia’s strong demand for Indonesian oil palm seeds is driven by the superior genetics of the DxP Dami G-2 variety, which is known for high productivity, uniform growth, and strong adaptability to diverse environmental conditions.

“International market trust in Indonesian oil palm seeds shows that Indonesia is not only the world’s largest palm oil producer but is also emerging as a competitive global hub for oil palm breeding technology,” Ginting said in an official statement cited by Palmoilmagazine.com, Sunday (June 21, 2026).

Prior to shipment, all germinated seeds underwent strict inspection at the Deli Weighing Laboratory. The quarantine process ensures that the seeds meet international standards required by importing countries.

Inspectors verified the condition of the plumule (shoot) and radicle (root), which must grow in balance at around 0.5 centimeters. This balance is a key indicator of seed vitality and readiness for planting in new environments.

After meeting all technical, sanitary, and phytosanitary requirements, the North Sumatra Quarantine Office issued a Phytosanitary Certificate, which is mandatory for legal acceptance and trade of plant materials in destination countries.

In addition to quality assurance, the quarantine authority also ensured that the exported seeds were free from internationally monitored plant pests and diseases.

Laboratory tests confirmed that the seeds were free from Coconut Cadang-Cadang Viroid (CCCVd), the cause of cadang-cadang disease. They were also declared free from Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. elaeidis, which causes vascular wilt disease, as well as weeds such as Imperata cylindrica and Cleome rutidosperma, and pests like Tirathaba mundella, known as the oil palm fruit bunch borer.

The export of superior oil palm seeds to Colombia marks an expansion of Indonesia’s role in the global agribusiness value chain. While Indonesia has traditionally dominated exports of palm oil and its derivatives, the country is now increasingly competitive in seed technology.

This development opens new opportunities for the national seed industry to expand into international markets and strengthens Indonesia’s position as a supplier of high-quality planting materials for palm oil-producing countries worldwide.
