PALMOILMAGAZINE, BANGKOK – Dida Gardera, Deputy for Food and Agribusiness Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of Indonesia, actively participated in the “2024 ICAO APAC Regional Seminar on Environment” held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the seminar focused on promoting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as a key solution for reducing carbon emissions in international aviation.
On the second day of the seminar, Dida presented on “Indonesia’s Potential for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Development,” highlighting several key points. As one of the largest aviation markets globally, with 251 airports and 50 more planned, Indonesia has significant potential to become a major player in the SAF industry.

Additionally, as the world’s leading palm oil producer, Indonesia generated 3.9 million tons of used cooking oil (UCO) in 2023 and plans to produce 238 million liters of SAF annually by 2026.
As in the official statement to Palmoilmagazine.com, Sunday (25/8/2024), even though clean energy is taken to minimize green-house gas, SAF is still raising issues in its use, such as, limited materials, expensive cost (to produce), and unavailable infrastructures.
Since 2020, Indonesia did SAF test successfully for kinds of planes. The latest test was in the third quarter of 2023 that showed SAF did not show different performance to other fossil and conventional fuel.
As the side product of palm oil extraction, PKE would have the potential to be changed as bioethanol that could be used as the material for SAF. Indonesia is proping PKE as the source of SAF material to be categorized in CORSIA lists.
In his closing presentation, Dida emphasized Indonesia would be committed to contribute in SAF development, minimize emission with some strategies globally. The seminar also emphasized it would be significant to get collaboration actively with every stakeholder, such as, the governments, fuel produces, plane producers, flight, airports, investors, and financial institutions to realize the goals.
