PALMOILMAGAZINE, BANDUNG – The Indonesian government is accelerating the implementation of its 50 percent biodiesel (B50) mandate in response to ongoing volatility in global energy prices. The policy is scheduled for nationwide enforcement starting July 1, 2026, supported by a series of cross-sector technical trials to ensure operational readiness.
Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), stated that B50 testing has been carried out in stages since early 2025, beginning with laboratory trials and progressing to real-world operational testing across key industries.
“Laboratory testing was completed in mid-2025, followed by simultaneous trials across six sectors starting December 9, 2025,” she said in Lembang, Bandung Regency, as quoted in an official statement on Thursday (April 23, 2026).

The trials covered automotive, mining heavy equipment, agriculture, marine transport, power generation, and railways. The automotive sector has been a primary focus, given its direct impact on daily public use.
According to Eniya, vehicles weighing under 3.5 tons are targeted to complete 50,000 kilometers of testing, while those above 3.5 tons have already reached 40,000 kilometers.
“By May, light vehicles are expected to reach 50,000 kilometers, after which comprehensive engine inspections will be conducted,” she added.

As of April 2026, interim results indicate that B50 use in diesel engines remains safe, with no significant technical issues reported. Key components—including engines, fuel filters, and lubrication systems—continue to perform within manufacturer standards.
Automotive Industry Signals Support
Positive feedback has also come from the automotive industry. The Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (GAIKINDO) expressed optimism that the road test results will support smooth implementation.
GAIKINDO member Abdul Rochim emphasized the importance of adopting the tested fuel specifications as the official standard.

“If the final results remain consistent, we fully support the policy. We hope the tested fuel specifications can serve as the benchmark for B50 implementation,” he said.
From a quality standpoint, B100—the primary component blended into B50—has met required standards, including key parameters such as maximum water content of 300 ppm, monoglyceride levels of 0.47 percent by mass, and oxidation stability of at least 900 minutes.
Performance testing shows no significant decline in vehicle efficiency. Fuel consumption remains within normal ranges, while emissions tests indicate that carbon monoxide (CO) levels and opacity stay below regulatory thresholds.

Technical evaluations further confirm that engine conditions and supporting components remain optimal throughout the testing period.
The government emphasized that the B50 mandate forms part of a long-term strategy to strengthen national energy security through the use of domestically sourced renewable energy.
Designed with a data-driven and scientifically tested approach, the policy aims to ensure safety, reliability, and optimal economic benefits for the public.
